I don't understand this film at all. A) I'm not sure if there was any real plot line. B) the characters were all incredibly annoying, with the father being the only remotely interesting person featured and even that was because he was the only truly dynamic character. C) the dinosaurs were just bizarre. D) the ending didn't make any sense. E) why was the older version of the boy running around the city then suddenly in the desert? I could go on asking questions and listing what I dislike for a good long time, but that would not do much good.
If a movie is as long as this one is, I would expect the plot and characters to be more dynamic, the themes and symbolism to be more present and intense, and just overall, for the film to be better. One thing that was brought up in class though that I thought was interesting was why was the film was set in the 1950s. I think that that was to deflect controversy about how the families interacted. In most other eras if you saw a husband and wife being so aggressive with each other life the spouses were in some of the scenes in the movie, it would bring a great deal of controversy and a different light to the movie. Being set in the 1950s though, it made it so, while those actions are not already, they are more easily digestible, at least in my opinion.

I agree that this film was completely confusing. Beautiful, but confusing. I really did not understand it and was completely bored the entire time. I don't really get how the father was an asshole the entire film but then all of a sudden he came back from a trip and was changed?? I'm commenting a while after we saw the film so my memory is a little off, but yeah there was a lot that I did not like in this film. Maybe it is because I don't fully understand everything that happened, but I don't know. This was not the film for me.
